Standards Working Group

Develop a set of metadata standards (MiAIRR) for the submission of adaptive immune receptor repertoire sequencing (AIRR-seq) datasets. Develop standardized file formats, schemas and data field names to represent MiAIRR metadata, annotated antibody and T cell receptor sequences, and any downstream data representations. These standards are defined in formal machine-readable specifications, allowing interoperability between software from different developers.

Goals

For 2024-2026:

Subsequent to the release of AIRR Schema v2.0, the WG plans to wind down. We will halt development and focus solely on as-needed Schema/API maintenance activities.

  • Release AIRR Data Standards v2.0
    • Reworking the AIRR Documentation site to improve usability/clarity
    • Production release of the germline and genotype schemas
    • Production release of the single-cell, receptor and reactivity schemas
    • Production release of the clone schema
    • Experimental release of file manifest and repertoire grouping schemas
    • Production release of the JavaScript API
    • Several minor, but backwards incompatible changes
  • Draft a manuscript to accompany the v2.0 release describing new standards development since the original Minimal Standards (2017) and Data Representations (2018) publications
  • Continue community outreach

Long-term vision and how WG products integrate with the AIRR-C mission:

The Standards WG aims to facilitate data sharing and interoperability of analysis tools within the AIRR-seq field through common data and metadata standards and documentation.

Resources

  • Machine-readable, open source schemas for AIRR-seq data.
  • Reference API libraries in R and Python providing read, write and validation operations for finalized schema.
  • Detailed documentation for Standards WG products, products of other WGs, public data submission, and listing of compliant community tools.

Episode 19 of the On AIRR podcast is here! What does it take to prepare for the next pandemic?

September 14, 2025 By Lorissa Corrie

In this episode, we explore ReVAMPP (Research and Development of Vaccines and Monoclonal Antibodies for Pandemic Preparedness), an NIH-funded initiative focused on pathogens that pose significant public health risks, including emerging viruses with pandemic potential. Together with Dr. Lauren Williamson and Dr. Robert Carnahan (Vanderbilt University Medical Center) and Dr. Matthew Vogt (University of North […]
